The role of the "U turn" team

  • We are a specialist service in Swindon working with young people who misuse alcohol and drugs (all illicit substances, solvents, prescribed medication, excluding tobacco)
  • We work with 10-18 year olds
  • We work very closely with our partners from a variety of statutory children’s services and voluntary groups
  • We accept referrals from all professionals and would like to encourage referrals from young people and their parents or carers over the phone, by fax, e-mail or post
  • We can provide a full assessment in relation to alcohol and substance misuse, cognitive-behavioural interventions, motivational interviewing, specialist prescribing. We work with young people to help them reduce the harm caused by alcohol and drug misuse and improve their health.
  • We can see young people in the places where they feel comfortable
  • We are always keen to find new ways of working in response to need identified by partners or young people
  • We would like to work closely with carers and parents of young people to help them understand issues around alcohol and substance misuse
  • We are available for consultation with professionals on how to work with young people using alcohol and substances.

Information Sharing and Confidentiality

In order to work effectively with young people, most of our services are confidential. However, we work towards the Every Child Matters agenda and will share information with relevant agencies if we have reason to believe the young person is at risk of serious harm. We will discuss this with the young person before doing so. We also explain our confidentiality policy to the young person at their first meeting.
