Business Rates - Payment Methods

On this page: Details of the methods by which Business Rates can be paid.

Business Rates Payment Methods

Payment can be made by any of the following means:

Direct Debit via Your Bank or Building Society

Direct Debit is Swindon Borough Council's preferred method of payment. Direct Debit is an automated method of paying your bills. Swindon Borough Council will arrange for your bank or building society to transfer your payments directly to us.

Benefits of Paying by Direct Debit

  • The payment will be collected on the due date, the first day of each month.
  • It's an easy and convenient way to pay.
  • It smooths cashflow and helps you budget for the future.
  • It saves you money on postage and stationery.
  • It avoids travelling expenses and queuing.
  • You do not have to complete a new form every year, unless you change bank or building society or move business premises.
  • You will be notified at least ten working days before an amount is debited.
  • You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time.
  • All payments are governed by the Direct Debit Guarantee.

The Direct Debit Guarantee

This Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits.

If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of you Direct Debit, Swindon Borough council will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request Swindon Borough Council to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request.

If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit by Swindon Borough Council or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society.

If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when Swindon Borough Council asks you to.

You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify us.

If you currently pay by any other method and wish to change to Direct Debit, you must complete a Direct Debit instruction and return it to Swindon Borough Council's Business Rate Section.
