Sarah Gillespie Quartet |
Tuesday 30 March, 8pm
A sonic reflection of the contemporary London street, Greenwich-born singer-songwriter Sarah Gillespie delivers a melting-pot mix of urban-folk and middle-eastern blues. Expect emotive ballads & raucous gypsy swing incorporating pre-rock elements of blues & vaudeville - with her trademark lyricism that knits everyday banter with raw poetry. Her dynamite band features internationally renowned Israeli-born jazz artist, Gilad Atzmon on accordion, clarinet and saxophone, Ben Bastin on double bass and Asaf Sirkis on drums.
In the meantime here is a clip of Gilad Atzmon and Sarah playing 'Nobody Know's You When You're Down and Out' live in the JAZZ FM Studio.
"She's an incandescent new presence who matches her imposing delivery with superior lyrics." John Fordham, The Guardian ****
"Haunting tunes and striking lyrics.... these songs are by turns tough and touching as well as being full of humorous asides such as the notion that the Girl from Ipanema has ended up as tabloid fodder...yearningly pretty and bitter sweet" Howard Male, The Independent ****
"A leftfield singersongwriter...wry lyrics and sinuous melodies" John Bunjey, Mojo ****
"A splendidly original debut, for Gillespie's music is a bracingly eclectic mix of Beat poetry with jazz, folk and Middle Eastern elements...with intriguing allusions to Salome, Delilah and Beelzebub abounding and to icons of cinema like Sophia Loren, Robert de Niro and the classic 'Brief Encounter'. Indeed, not withstanding the streetwise sassiness, there's a songwriting sophistication here, one feels that Cole Porter - another icon to whom Gillespie refers - would have recognized.'Trevor Hodgett, Rock'n'Real ****
A major new singer songwriter...Sarah Gillespie is one of the most individual yet recognizable voices to emerge in some time. All About Jazz

Ben Waters Band |
Saturday 17 April, 8pm
Ben Waters Band, with the Fraser Tilley Trio as support.
A great line up of superb musicians, good sounds and above all, this man and his band are, great fun !
Ben Waters is widely acknowledged as one of the most exciting piano players in Europe today. “A fab boogie woogie pianist” as one journalist noted. Make no mistake about it, this is hard hitting music at its best.
This whirlwind musician plays some of the fastest boogie woogie piano you'll ever come across. Word's spreading about this outstanding musician. Ben has shared the stage with more top names in the business, including Ray Davies, Dave Gilmour, Dave Stewart, Status Quo, The Beach Boys, The Pogues, Leo Sayer, The Teenagers, Chris Jagger, Freddie Star and Shirley Bassey
Ben’s live shows have been compared to Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Jimi Hendrix. Make no mistake about it, this is hard hitting music at its best. Influenced by some of the finest pianists in the world, Ben initially bit the bait of Boogie Woogie and pianists like Albert Ammonns and Meade Lux Lewis created a desire to own a piano. His parents obliged (not knowing that he would be shaking the house). Then the New Orleans bug struck, and the second line beat of cats like Professor Longhair and Dr John glued him to the piano stool for hours on end. Then BANG out of the blue Rock n’ Roll Struck. Fats Domino’s 60th birthday came on TV featuring Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis. This had a profound impact on Ben’s life; he began playing gigs in pubs and clubs emulating his heroes.
Since then Ben’s name has become synonymous with excellent performance. His raunchy vocals and exuberant style have earned him a superb reputation as one of the genres finest performers. His own style has evolved from his musical roots, and thirteen years later he has surely done every kind of venue imaginable and played with some of the finest musicians in the world.
Recently Ben's been appearing with a few of his heroes:
JOOLS HOLLAND-CHARLIE WATTS-SHAKIN' STEVENS-CHUCK BERRY-LITTLE RICHARD-JERRY LEE LEWIS-AXEL ZWINGENBERGER and others. Ben has shared the stage with more top names in the business, including Ray Davies, Dave Gilmour, Dave Stewart, Status Quo, The Beach Boys, The Pogues, Leo Sayer, The Teenagers, Chris Jagger, Freddie Star and Shirley Bassey !
He's also played at countless special events including a Royal Variety Show for H.R.H Prince Edward, Jools Holland's Wedding, The Elephant Durbar for H.R.H Prince Charles, Mick Jagger & Jerry Hall’s Christmas Party (Mick sat in for a few songs), Jerry Hall’s 50th Birthday, The Royal Albert Hall, The Royal Festival Hall, BB Kings Times Square New York. He recently played for House star Hugh Laurie's 50th Birthday.... because it's superb music, uplifting, effervescent - great fun !
"We were both gobsmacked by Ben and his band"
".... so many people were absolutely blown away by how wonderful Ben and the band were!"
"Ben went down a storm and everyone was absolutely bowled over by him.
Many people thought that he was one of the highlights over the weekend" (Colne festival)

Fraser Tilly Trio
Influenced by soul, blues and jazz artists, the Fraser Tilley Trio blend their own soulful grooves with rich blues grooves. From intimate venues to festival appearances their sheer energy and enthusiasm continue to thrill live audiences. Starting out as a pure acoustic project, with an old wooden beat box for company (a cajon for those who want to be politically correct), the addition of jazz/funk guitar and percussion paved the way to live shows which combine sweet soul grooves through to thumpin blues grinding grooves. They are now, possibly, the only 4 piece Trio you'll come across!

Po Girl |
Tuesday 18 May, 8pm
Po’ Girl have become one of the most successful bands ever to emerge from Canada. Country, blues, folk, alternative rock, and a touch of jazz all come together in the world of Po’ Girl. Think lazy melodies, sweet harmony, and mellow grooves and you’ve got a bit of an idea of how they sound, but the freewheeling Po’ Girl always have a trick or two up their sleeve.
“Americana can seem like a language from a forgotten era, but Po’Girl’s sentiment never feels forced, the lyricism never cliché or false. They manage to maintain that traditional and nostalgic sound while breathing fresh life into an old-fashioned genre.” Rolling Stone
“The lovely Allison Russell …. her soaring, at times ethereal vocals, have so much character and feeling that she took the spellbound audience through the whole gamut of emotions. There are elements of folk, country and blues all played with a strong jazzy feel. All in all a highly accomplished band…world beaters who could even start a new genre” Maverick Magazine July 2009
“What separates Po’Girl from so many other folky groups with multiple singers is that no matter how sweet their voices are, what really stands out is the mesmerizing groove. They’re fine songwriters, too, but that’s not what first hits you. It’s the lazy sway of Po’ Girl’s music, a hypnotic and humid sway that’s hard to resist.” All Music
“Po'Girl has the same womanly (not girlish, mind you) croon of the 1920s and '30s blues mamas - yet their music isn't of another era There's depth to this music. . Po' Girl are hauling their music from a deep well of influences and I'd recommend joining them for the ride.” No Depression
“Their uplifting take on American folk music, combining it with jazz, roots and a little bit of pretty much everything else, has the ability to put a smile on anyone’s face” Glasgow Americana Festival 2009
“A sweet gem showcasing some of the finest acoustic musicians Canada currently has to offer.” BBC, Folk and Country Review
“Folk-festival sensations, thrilling audiences with their homespun musicianship and back-porch harmonies.” Nicholas Jennings, Inside Entertainment
“Just seeing Po’Girl is always a treat” Maurice Hope, The Northern Echo

Frisky and Mannish |
Friday 21 May;| 8pm
Frisky & Mannish’s School Of Pop
School is in session, and pop is on the syllabus.
By the time class is dismissed, you’ll know your Kate Bush from your Kate Nash, your D-I-S-C-O from your D-I-V-O-R-C-E, and your Eternal Flame from your That’s Not My Name.
F&M will twist and shout you through fifty years of pop with astonishing musical skill, and a death-defying lack of restraint.
Following a critically acclaimed, smash-hit, packed-house run at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe and a sell-out show in the West End it’s time for F&M to go on tour.
It is time to get educated. 50 lines, please: I must go and see Frisky and Mannish.
The show was a hit with audiences and critics, receiving eight five star reviews.

Paul Lamb and the Kingsnakes |
Wednesday 26 May, 8pm
Paul Lamb & The Kingsnakes
Paul Lamb is the undisputed king of British Blues Harp and is in demand throughout the world. With a wonderful equilibrium of real blues, boogie, swing and good time jump, Paul Lamb & The King Snakes take the blues to a new level that will have you tapping along!
Hailed by aficionados and music press around the world as Europe’s foremost blues harmonica exponent, Paul Lamb has forged himself a place in the history books as one of the greatest players of our time. He has won countless awards, sold record-breaking quantities of albums, and performed the world over with his long-standing musical compatriots, The Kingsnakes. Recently inducted into the British Blues Awards Hall Of Fame (alongside the likes of Peter Green, John Mayall & Alexis Korner), Lamb still continues to bring his infectious brand of soulful blues to a plethora of fans around the globe…
Born in 1955, and originally hailing from the urban & industrial backdrop of Newcastle, Paul Lamb began his illustrious career at the tender age of 15. Struggling against the tide of local un-employment and economic depression, he took to the road working the club scene around the UK, paying his dues in the time-honoured tradition of the blues.
Within a short time he was representing Great Britain in the World Harmonica Championships, leading to a spell of working with his mentor, Sonny Terry. The following years ensued, seeing Lamb performing with Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Brownie McGhee, and countless other blues greats that had originally inspired him. However, the need to write and express his own music soon gave birth to the Blues Burglars, the first incarnation of the Kingsnakes (and the beginning of the longstanding collaboration between Paul Lamb and guitar genius Johnny Whitehill).
The Burglars released an album on the legendary Red Lightnin’ label (“Whoopin’”) and Lamb swiftly became known in his own right due to the huge critical acclaim that accompanied the release. As the young harmonica virtuoso became more focused and confident of his abilities, a new band line-up became an inevitability, and Paul Lamb & The Kingsnakes were thus born. Signing to Ace Records in 1991, Paul & his band went on to take the blues world by storm with a gruelling tour schedule in support of their Ace debut (aptly entitled “Paul Lamb & The Kingsnakes” CDBLUH 011). After a follow up release on Euro label “Tight & Juicy” (“Shifting Into Gear” T&J CD 656834), the band have since enjoyed a further 5 releases with Indigo Records as part of a 6 album deal. These five albums went on to secure Paul Lamb’s reputation internationally as a one-of-a-kind bluesman, as did the heavy tour schedules that the Kingsnakes to this day, still happily endure (approx 290 dates a year!)… In addition, one would be hard pushed to think of a prestigious international festival that Paul Lamb & The Kingsnakes have not graced by headlining at some point, let alone merely appeared at!
To date, the band can regularly be seen far a-field; from Swindon to Spain, Belgium to Bahrain, Italy, Germany, Hungary to Hong-Kong…

Silent Disco |
A Silent Disco... and going retro
Ever tried a silent disco?
They're the new and unique concept sweeping the UK and now you can have a go... at the Bowl Concert on Friday 4 June.
Silent Discos do away with the traditional speaker systems used in nightclubs or festivals. Everyone has a set of our wireless headphones to listen to the music and then have two DJ's playing simultaneously on two separate channels, which means you only listen to the music that you want to hear! If you don't like the music from the first DJ just flick the switch and listen to the second DJ. You are in control!
The Silent Disco, by SilentArena, starts at 7.30pm, (gates open 6.30pm). It's going to be great. Picture the scene. You walk into the Bowl and you see 100's of people all dancing but you can't hear any music. One of the DJ's starts to play Dizzie Rascal's Bonkers and half the crowd go wild, the other half are singing along to Kings of Leons, Sex on Fire - it's like nothing you have ever experienced before!
Why two DJs?
It's quite simple really. No DJ can please the entire crowd 100% of the time, by having two DJs we give the crowd a choice in which song they listen to at any one time and importantly at a volume that is decided by each individual. Everyone loves to be in control of the music they listen to and a Silent Disco is the perfect way to provide this opportunity.

Showaddywaddy October 2010 |
Friday 8 October, 8.00pm.
As if the bands amazing success through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were not enough, Showaddywaddy are here now in the 21st Century and still in demand.
After 35 incredible years rock and roll music is alive and kicking in the hands of the legendary Showaddywaddy.
Showaddywaddy has long been established as Europe’s most successful ever exponents in the art of rock and roll.
Their record speaks for itself:
- 23 top 40 hit singles including 10 top 5 hits
- 15 massive selling albums (including 3 multi-platinum)
- an unbelievable live show, acclaimed the world over
- over 50 top of the pops appearances
- numerous industry awards
- Royal Variety performances (one to the delight of the late Queen Mother - who actually requested to meet the band post-performance)
- bill toppers at the legendary golden orphens world festival to a staggering 300 million people across the globe - making history in the process by becoming the first western-world band to be screened live in Cuba!
As if the band’s amazing success through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’ were not enough, here now in the 21st century the demand for Showaddywaddy is every bit as strong - surely a testament to their incredible stage performances!
Late 2004 saw the release of the band's much anticipated remastered “Very best of” collection. The album’s success exceeded all expectations, giving the band it's first gold album award for in excess of 20 years, and staying in the album chart throughout the hectic '04 Christmas season. This chart success has once again confirmed Showaddywaddy as proven recording artists.
On the back of this rekindled success the band were asked to record their first album of new material for 15 years! The album, entitled 'I love rock & roll', was a classic collection of 70's hits originally recorded by various other artists. This time around given the unique Showaddywaddy treatment!
Review
Jane Shrimpton saw the show in February and has booked again for October. She sent in a review:
Wow! Who says it doesn't pay to go back in time?
I had been looking forward to seeing Showaddywaddy for many weeks and bought my tickets as soon as they went on sale. The last time I saw them they were supporting David Cassidy at White City Stadium and I was there for my 15th birthday.
I was not disappointed!
I have to admit I only recognised the lead singer, Dave Bartram, but the entertainment and the professionalism of all the musicians was second to none. Al James, a magnificent singer, pianist, guitarist and saxophonist just blew me away.
The first half of the show was covers and songs from their latest album recorded in Memphis. But they didn't just stand and deliver the songs - they performed them, in their own fun way.
The second half of the show opened with the Dambusters music and then Showaddywaddy came on in their typical colourful rock and roll coats. They played hit after hit, hardly stopping for breath. When they did stop to change intruments, Dave, the lead singer, came out into audience, answering any questions put to him, about the band or any members. This of course was all done with humour as he latched onto the Wiltshire accent. Just imagine if you will, over 200 people singing a well known tune with the only lyrics being 'Ooh Arrh, ooh aarh'. (not sure how that is spelt!)
Towards the end of the show members of the audience were invited to join the band on stage and dance to the music. A wonderful end to a wonderful, live show. I am so looking forward to their return in October and yes I have my tickets on the front row!
