Mervyn Peake – The Man and His Art

An illustrated presentation and talk by his son and author, Sebastian Peake.

Mervyn PeakeAuthor of Gormenghast and one of the greatest artists and writers of the twentieth century, Mervyn Peake was a fascinating man. More than mere author, he collaborated with Benjamin Britten on a stage production of his classic work, and his illustrations for Treasure Island are reckoned to be amongst the best ever produced.

To mark the fortieth anniversary of his death, a collection of his poems have been newly published as well as a personal biography. This event is a close and fascinating examination of his life and work.

An ARTSWORDS presentation, in association with the Swindon Festival of Literature.

Thursday 18 December, 7.30pm

Christmas and its Customs - an illustrated look into the myths and magic of Christmas with Dr Patrick Harding.

Why is Santa dressed in red? Why do we hang up holly and mistletoe? What date was Jesus born? Why do we have Christmas crackers? What do reindeers drink? With big pictures, fascinating details and brilliant stories, author and broadcaster Patrick Harding both entertains and sets the record straight as he delves into the background of Christmas traditions and rituals.

With mince pies, mulled wine, and appropriate seasonal jollity, this promises to be a lively event to help lead us into Christmas!
