Stephen Merchant - Work in Progress - Tuesday 12 August

Sold out in 3 hours

A rare opportunity to see one of the country’s finest and funniest comedians brought many people to the Arts Centre as the tickets went on sale for Stephen Merchant. The queue wound itself round the Arts Centre foyer and the phone did not stop ringing for the entire afternoon.

Clarry Bean, Arts Programming Manager for Culture Swindon, said:

"It's fantastic news that Stephen has proved so popular following on from similar 'Work In Progress' shows by Frank Skinner and Lenny Henry last year. The Arts Centre is a great environment for comedians to trial material and we have up-and-coming comedian Mark Watson doing just that as part of our Comedy Festival on 30th June."

English Emmy, Golden Globe, British Comedy Award and BAFTA award winning director and comedy actor, Stephen Merchant, will be performing his  'Work In Progress' show as he tries out new material for a large-scale stand up comedy tour to follow.

Best known for his work with Ricky Gervais in the popular British sitcoms The Office and Extras, Stephen began his career as a stand up comedian. He was a finalist at the 1998 Daily Telegraph Open Mic awards before getting into radio, later meeting Ricky Gervais at Xfm and the rest as they say is history.

What they say

Stacey Cooke, a Swindon mum, loves the Arts Centre. She says, "It's such an intimate venue. I love it because I get so involved. And it's value for money. I have never been to a bad show. I absolutely love it, I feel part of it!"

Mr Garraway has a similar view:

"The Arts Centre was a major factor in me choosing to live in Old Town. Coming from Oxford, where there was so much to do, I sought out the Arts Centre and decided I wanted to be within walking distance of the venue. I have been to a number of events here already and not seen a bad one yet. I love the diversity of your programme."
