Community Performing Arts

Young people drummingA community performing arts group has over 90 members – from age 7-70! - and continues to grow.

Dorcan Performing Arts Group is about having fun, said Gina Musty, Business Manager, so much so that many who come to watch a show, or help with music, then end up joining the group.

Now in their eighth year, the group offers the whole community an opportunity to tread the boards, whatever their background, culture or disability.

Excellent show

Dorcan Performing Arts Group in actionIn their latest show, Robby Hoody and his 12 Incredible Men, every member had a speaking part, as well as being in the chorus. Because the show included a carnival scene they needed to learn new skills. Gina explained, “We had workshops with internationally renowned Chip Bailey, who led a drum workshop and a Suits u Circus, and taught many circus skills. It was an excellent show that kept the audience entertained for over two hours for two nights. Among the audience were the Mayor, Shirley Ludford and Swindon Advertiser Editor Dave King.”

Gina continued, “The group is self funding and non profit making but with ever growing costs for costumes, props, and equipment we constantly need to source sponsorship and donations. These are becoming more difficult with many of the local businesses now adopting their own charities and not being in a position to support smaller community ones.”

The group has a trained Arts Awards officer and they have a number of people undertaking their Bronze Award. Many more have signed up to participate.

DPAG work in partnership with Dorcan Technology College, meeting every Tuesday in term-time from 7pm until 9pm, with three trained tutors offering workshops in dance, drama, voice and music.
