Benefit Fraud Investigation

On this page: What we do to counter benefit fraud, and how you can help us.

About Benefit Fraud

Swindon Borough Council actively works against Benefit fraud – people who claim Benefits that they are not entitled to.

Benefits are paid for by public money – in other words, out of the taxes that you pay.

People committing benefit fraud are stealing your money. For that reason, it is important for you to help us keep that money safe, so that it is available to those who genuinely need it.

What happens When a Report of Benefit Fraud is Made

The Benefit Counter-Fraud team will investigate the report and check any evidence to see if the report is supported. Our Benefit Counter-Fraud team have additional powers, such as comparing databases with other agencies and employers. If the evidence shows Benefit Fraud has been committed, the claimant will be interviewed and have to pay back the overpaid Benefit, and a sanction, such as a local authority caution or administrative penalty can be applied, or they could be prosecuted.
