Your Council Tax property band and charges

Every home in England has been allocated one of eight bands according to its estimated sale value on 1 April 1991. New properties are valued as if they had existed in 1991.

The basic amount of Council Tax due for a property depends on the band it is in.

The table below shows the value range that determines the band. Bands are allocated by the Listing Officer of the Valuation Office Agency, not by Swindon Borough Council. These bands are the same throughout England.

  • Up to £40,000 - Band A
  • £40,001 to £52,000 - Band B
  • £52,001 to £68,000 - Band C
  • £68,001 to £88,000 - Band D
  • £88,001 to £120,000 - Band E
  • £120,001 to £160,000 - Band F
  • £160,001 to £320,000 - Band G
  • Over £320,000 - Band H

You can check your property band by entering your postcode on the Council Tax valuation list.

What we charge for each band

Swindon is split into a number of administrative parishes. Charges for each property band differ from parish to parish. Differences in Council Tax are due to the different levels of spending by the parishes and the areas that are not parished.

Appealing your property band

If you think your property is in the wrong valuation band, you may be able to challenge your property band with the Valuation Office Agency.
