Getting Swindon active inspired by London 2012

Paralympic sports, swimming, wheelchair basketball and fencing are just some of the sports on offer as part of an Access Activity Day designed to get youngsters of all abilities more active.

The activities day, which takes place on Friday (24 February) at the Link Centre, has been organised by Swindon Borough Council’s Leisure Services and Advisory Teachers, and is funded by Aiming High and the Amateur Swimming Association.

All special schools and children with visual or physical impairments from mainstream schools across the borough have been invited to the free event, from 10am until 2.30pm.

Swindon-based GB Wheelchair Basketball player Ben Fox will be attending the event to encourage and inspire the children who take part.

The Access Day aims to introduce children to new activities, which they may not have tried, or even heard of, before. There will also be opportunities to find out how they can start practising the activity on a regular basis.

As well as Swimming, Wheelchair Basketball and Fencing young people will also have the chance to try their hand at boccia, climbing, martial arts, wheelchair rugby and seated volleyball.

Last year 179 pupils from 30 different schools attended the event and organisers are hoping for a similar turnout next week.

Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Corporate Services, said: “Our Access Days are always very successful and I’m delighted Ben Fox has given up his time to attend the event.

“We always provide a range of activities and it is a good opportunity for the children to try different sports.”

Swindon Wildcats players will be supporting young people on the ice, while Swindon Town’s Football in the Community team will also be running football sessions.
