Full Steam Ahead for Photography Students

Nine HND Photography students from Swindon College, School of Art, will have their work on public display at a special photographic exhibition starting next week at the STEAM Museum, Fire Fly Avenue, Kemble Drive.

Entitled ‘Nine’, the new exhibition will open on 24 February, 11.00 am to 4.00 pm and shows until 22 March.

The students* have been taking photographs of the displays and collections at STEAM as part of their final year studies.

Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council Deputy Leader, said: “STEAM has worked with Swindon College, School of Art on a number of student projects, since 2009. We are very pleased that the students are showcasing their work to a wide audience at STEAM and hope Swindon residents will support them by coming to view the ‘Nine’ exhibition.”

Elaine Arthurs, STEAM Collections Officer, said: “We are thrilled to have this special exhibition at STEAM. The photographs capture different aspects of the STEAM Collection, including GWR archive material, uniforms, clocks, tools and locomotives. The students focussed on the colours, textures and details of the exhibits and archive items; often transforming them into different shapes and forms. The result is an exciting array of abstract, atmospheric and visually stunning photographs.”

Peter Benson from Swindon College said: “This course is focussed on developing students as professional photographers.  As part of their HND studies, they were tasked with photographing the collection at STEAM in a contemporary and exciting way. The images produced are fantastic! We wanted to showcase their work to the public and STEAM is the ideal venue.”

Anthony Porter, one of the students who created ‘Nine’ said: “We cannot wait to get our images on display at the museum. There are 27 photographs on show; three from each of us. It was a really tough choice selecting the final pieces for the exhibition and we hope the public will enjoy them!”

The students also have some of their images published in STEAM’s prestigious Souvenir Guide, available at the museum.

‘Nine’ is free with normal admission and is located in STEAM’s Special Exhibition area, close to the recreated station platform.

STEAM Normal admission: £6.40 for adults and £4.25 for children under 16. Children under 3 go free and Swindoncard holders can get a discount on admission prices.

STEAM is open every day between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm during winter.
